What would you wish for to have eternal happiness?

Three soldiers are walking on the road. Along the road they saw an old man. As they go near the old man is wounded. They apply first aid to the wounds of the old man and carried him home. The next day the three soldiers visit the old man and see how is he. Then the old man said “You have saved my life now it’s my time to repay you”… The soldiers say no to the old man but the old man insists. The old man said “Each one of you shall be given a wish a wish that will make you happy”. He asks the first soldier “What would you wish?” The first soldier reply “I wish for a box of treasures” then the old man said “Wish granted, go home and you will find the treasure”. The man close his eyes but what he sees the first soldier happiness will not last long for the treasure will be spent and nothing will be left… The second soldier says “I wish for good looks” the old man replies “Wish granted, go home and find a mirror that you will see your new face” the old man close his eyes but what he see the second soldier happiness will not last long for his looks will be vanish as he grow old. The third soldier “I wish for wisdom and contentment for what I have” the old man said “Wish granted, go home” the old man close his eyes and see that the third soldier happiness last long.
The third soldier was given a heart so wise and understanding that he was able to discern right from wrong. The gift of wisdom and understanding is a gift of the Holy Spirit, one of the seven-fold gifts poured into our lives in the Sacrament of Confirmation. The gift of wisdom is practical insight with spiritual implications. Wisdom is “thinking in the Holy Spirit.”
If the first and second soldier has wisdom on how to handle the treasure and good looks maybe the happiness they want will be forever.
We are called to make decisions every day. We cannot do these ourselves and so we too need to ask the Lord for wisdom and understanding to govern us all our days.
